Position Information

Candidates with a background in landscape maintenance and experience with woody and herbaceous ornamentals is preferred.

Position Objective
Responsible for horticultural maintenance of company-owned property. Performs tasks involved in the culture and maintenance of woody ornamentals, herbaceous ornamentals, interior foliage plants, landscape maintenance, and greenhouse production. Accountabilities will focus on one of two areas: herbaceous ornamentals and greenhouse production or woody ornamentals and landscape maintenance. Assists with on the job training for seasonal employees and other tasks.


Primary Accountabilities
- Woody Ornamental Maintenance (20%)
- Prunes shrubs, trees and groundcovers to species specific growth habits, perform renewal, structural, clearance and corrective pruning and shearing as seasonally effective or assigned.
- Utilizes IPM techniques to determine appropriate pest management.
- Accurately calibrate and apply fertilizers and pesticides.
- Monitors woody ornamentals for sufficient water and fertilization utilizing fixed or portable irrigation, hoses or root feeders for application.
- Maintains required equipment and supplies.

- Herbaceous Ornamental Maintenance (20%)
- Provides basic cultural requirements for interior foliage and flowering pot plants.
- Prepares, installs and maintains annual and perennial plant display beds.
- Utilizes IPM techniques to determine appropriate pesticide usage.
- Accurately calibrate and apply fertilizers and pesticides to herbaceous ornamentals.
- Monitors herbaceous ornamentals for sufficient water and fertilization utilizing fixed or portable irrigation for application.
- Installs, maintains and restores native prairie butterfly garden, savanna and other natural area plantings.

- Greenhouse Production (20%)
- Performs soil sterilization and appropriate media component mixing.
- Completes various crop production tasks including transplanting seedlings from seed flats and plug trays and utilizing stock plants for cuttings.
- Monitors crop for sufficient water and fertilization using a CLF program.
- Implements IPM techniques for pest management.
- Executes appropriate spring and fall perennial divisions.
- Maintains required supplies.

- Landscape Maintenance (20%)
- Cuts, maintains and renovates turf areas, walk and hardscape edges utilizing lawn tractor with attachments, power mower, trimmer, edger and other power equipment.
- Utilizing an IPM program, apply fertilizer, appropriate pesticides and biological controls to turf areas, water features and natural areas.
- Installs, maintains and repairs various exterior signage, landscape furnishings, nest boxes and other trail amenities.
- Applies appropriate pesticides to mulch beds, pavement, walks and curbs.
- Maintains and replenishs mulched plant beds, tree rings and mulched signs.
- Monitors and removes debris and weeds from site hardscape, water features, trails and natural areas.

- Other (5%)
- Utilizes tractor with attachments and other power equipment for the removal of snow and ice.
- Monitors weather conditions outside of normal working hours to execute snow removal responsibilities.
- Monitors water features and take appropriate actions to maintain clarity.
- Assists with structural pest control.
- Supports special events.
- Provides on-the-job training and work direction for seasonal employees and other duties as assigned.

Education/Licenses/Designations
- Meets qualifications under EPA Worker Protection Standard (49 CFR).
- Successfully obtain State Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License category 3.0 (Turf and Landscape) within 6 months of being hired.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills Requirements
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Knowledge of Landscape Maintenance and related horticultural principals gained through two years of formal training or applicable work experience.
- Must be able to interpret Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Must be able to read and comprehend pesticide labels as well as accurately calibrate application equipment.
- Valid driver's license required plus an acceptable driving record.

- This position requires the ability to work with exposure to fumes or airborne particles between 66 and 100% of the time.
- This position requires the ability to work in high, precarious places between 1 and 33% of the time.
- This position requires the ability to work in loud noise (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).
- This position requires the ability to work in moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
- This position requires the ability to work with exposure to moving parts between 66 and 100% of the time.
- This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position requires the ability to work with exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals between 33 and 66% of the time.
- This position requires the ability to work with exposure to vibration between 1 and 33% of the time.
- This position requires the ability to work with exposure to outside weather conditions between 66 and 100% of the time.
- This position requires the ability to work in wet and/or humid conditions between 33 and 66% of the time.

- This position requires the ability to work with peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point) for extended periods of time.
- This position requires the ability to reach with hands and arms between 66 and 100% of the time.
