Position Details:

Prefer candidates with knowledge of SQL, relational database, Business Intelligence, Informatica tools or XML.

Position Objective
The Application Development Engineer is responsible for software design and development for simple applications or simple to moderately complex program modules of business solutions. The engineer works on progressively more complicated programs and modules under instructions from more senior technologists. They may work in a mainframe, client/server, business intelligence, and/or web environment.


Primary Accountabilities
- Application Development (55%)
- Designs and develops simple software solutions to the level of quality defined by the requirements in adherence with I/S standards, methodology and internal controls. Identifies and provides solution alternatives for the defined functional and system requirements when needed.
- Provides appropriate documentation for design decisions, estimating assumptions, code modules, and performance metrics as required by organization standards.
- Conducts and/or participates in testing (i.e. unit, system integration) and reviews appropriate organization standards. Prepares and conducts code and unit test walkthroughs for their deliverables.
- Participates in peer code reviews for others and provides constructive feedback.
- Collaborates with other programmers and technologists to ensure the development and maintenance of quality software solutions.
- Collaborates with others regarding effectiveness of systems flow, data usage and manual or automated processes to verify requirements.
- Ensures software development meets standards for programming, design, performance, and security.
- Participates in team activities and taking on additional work tasks as needed to help the team accomplish the desired outcome or goals.
- Recognizes and communicates quality, deadline, and deliverables issues within own work environment to team leads and/or management.

- Maintenance & Support (45%)
- Provides second level support and off hour on-call on a rotating basis and as needed.
- Repairs, modifies, and develops additional functionality.
- Follows and supports change management practices and internal controls standards. Communicates changes and impact to those affected.
- Shares knowledge and information with others to resolve problems and build team knowledge.
- Creates and maintains service desk diagnostics and job aids for area of responsibility. Updates and/or reviews with those affected.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills Requirements
- Basic knowledge and understanding of activities, tasks, practices and deliverables associated with writing and modifying objects that comprise an application system.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the syntax, structure, features and facilities of at least one programming language.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of distributed systems.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of systems development life cycle (SDLC).
- Basic knowledge and understanding of activities, tasks, tools and techniques for testing applications to ensure adherence to functional and quality requirements.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of relational databases and standard query language (SQL).
- Demonstrated experience reading and interpreting application system design and program specifications.
- Demonstrated experience writing programs in a specific language for a specific platform.
