Position Details:

Candidates can be considered at the lower level, depending on qualifications.

Prefer candidates with experience with installation, configuration, maintenance and support of Informatica PowerCenter or a strong development background in Informatica PowerCenter. Also strongly desire candidates who have experience troubleshooting infrastructure issues.

Position Objective
The Middleware/Transaction Processing Specialist is responsible for the proper functioning of middleware, ETL (extract, transform and load), and transaction processing systems which are a key component of business systems enabling communication and management of data in distributed applications. Specialists provide technical leadership and expertise of the unit's software. This includes mentoring colleagues on the usage of the software and participating in client and infrastructure projects that use the software. With a broad understanding of many technologies and applications, Specialists provide leadership when new approaches are needed to solve difficult problems. It is expected that Specialists stay current on trends in the industry and make recommendations for changes and improvements.


Primary Accountabilities
- System Support (55%)
- Provides expert (third) level support.
- Escalates problems to external vendors as necessary, ensuring prompt and accurate resolution.
- Develops and continually improves procedures, standards and methods for team members and other I/S colleagues.
- Provides input to strategic architecture planning as it relates to technologies supported by the unit. This may include making recommendations regarding architectural issues and the tools and technologies to be applied in a project.
- Evaluates the operational characteristics of installed software by utilizing available tools to monitor usage trends, reliability, and availability. Working with those that support client applications, identifies and resolves issues to maintain operating efficiency and work quality.
- Builds understanding of the unit`s technologies within the organization through the creation of self-service options.

- Technical Leadership (20%)
- Solves the most complex problems by applying expert level knowledge and understanding of the unit`s technologies and knowledge of solutions that either support or use those technologies.
- Communicates effectively to different audiences including their peers, superiors, and those within and outside of I/S on a wide range of topics related to supported technologies.
- Conducts research to explore innovative ways the unit can expand on the capabilities of the solutions provided by the unit.
- Works with technical vendor resources to solve the most difficult technical issues holding vendors accountable for the technology portions of contracts.
- Mentors other members of the unit and seeks opportunities to provide cross-training.
- Assists less experienced staff to resolve issues.
- May manage medium to large size projects, or parts of a project, holding others accountable to delivery deadlines and quality. Manages own tasks within a work plan, using I/S standard methodology. Keeps own portion of work plan up-to-date, adjusting and documenting changes as necessary to meet deliverables and deadlines.
- Partners with clients, consultants, applications technologists, external stakeholders, and other I/S domains to understand business and systems requirements. Writes contracts for project deliverables and has approved by project managers. Approves subcontracts written for projects that are being managed within domain.
- Supports the project team's use of specific technology software and tools, acts as a subject matter expert and counsels applications technologists in the best use of the tool.
- Applies technical expertise as technical lead within a project team. This may include development, testing, and production implementation.
- Recognizes and escalates quality, deadline, or deliverables issues within own work environment to team leads or project managers.
- Leads post-implementation reviews to identify opportunities to continually improve processes.

- Software Installation, Configuration and Maintenance (15%)
- Leads software installation, configuration, and maintenance following established procedures and change control standards.
- Consults to others on planning, migration, and implementation issues.
- Performs software post-installation verification.
- Diagnoses and fixes the most complex system problems.
- Develops and continually improves procedures and documentation.

- New Technology (10%)
- Maintains up-to-date awareness of industry developments and best practices in technologies, tools, software engineering processes, and I/S applications related to their area of specialization.
- Leads the analysis and assessment of new technologies, conducting vendor reviews and producing Requests for Information and Requests for Proposal as appropriate. Provides recommendations for investment in new products, which may include cost/benefit analysis.
- Manages vendor relationships on an ongoing basis, ensuring that American Family's interests are effectively represented and the organization has access to information on new developments in technology.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills Requirements
- Demonstrated experience as a technical lead.
- Demonstrated experience writing programs for one or more of the supported technologies.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of one or more supported technologies including: messaging, web/media server, Java application server, managed file transfer, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), transaction processing, service oriented architecture infrastructure, enterprise service bus, and tools to support and maintain these technologies.
- Solid knowledge and understanding of infrastructure architecture principles and frameworks.
- Solid knowledge and understanding of several infrastructure technologies such as database, middleware, content management, system management, network, security, server, operating system, storage, and workstations.

Travel Requirements
- This position requires travel up to 5% of the time.
Working Conditions
- Ability to participate in 24x7 off hour/on call on a rotating basis.
