Position Objective
The Network Engineering Senior Technologist is responsible for system administration and the maintenance and configuration of the network infrastructure technologies and solutions used throughout the enterprise. The network infrastructure includes core network routing and switching technologies, WAN and LAN services and technologies, mobile and remote networking technologies as well as overall network monitoring and management. Employees in this job are responsible for identifying ways networking technologies and solutions that can be leveraged to improve customer experiences and employee productivity.
Primary Accountabilities
- Network Infrastructure & Systems Support (40%)
- Provides second level support and assists with third level support. Troubleshoots and manages resolution of operational problems for assigned software or hardware technologies.
- Evaluates the operational characteristics and usage trends of the network infrastructure and components by utilizing available tools to monitor and manage reliability, availability and performance. Works with those that support client applications to identify and resolve issues to maintain operating efficiency and work quality.
- Escalates problems to external vendors as necessary, ensuring prompt and accurate resolution.
- Maintains procedures, standards and methods for team members and other I/S colleagues.
- Builds understanding of network engineering technologies within the organization through the creation of self-service options.
- Shares knowledge and mentors/assists team members and other peers who are less experienced or knowledgeable in a specific technology.
- Network Solutions & Service Installation, Configuration & Maintenance (40%)
- Leads and direct others in the overall administration of a specialized platform or technology.
- Performs network installation, configuration, and maintenance tasks and projects following established procedures and change control standards.
- Performs post-installation verification.
- Diagnoses and fixes network system problems.
- Assists Specialist level staff with on-going capacity planning processes for communication and collaboration technologies. This provides assurance of proper system operation and performance as well as input to software and hardware lifecycle management.
- Produces and maintains documentation.
- New Technology (15%)
- Maintains up-to-date awareness of industry developments and best practices in area of specialization.
- Leads or participates in the research and development of new products.
- Partners with clients, consultants, applications technologists, external stakeholders, and other I/S domains to understand business and systems requirements and proactively identify the network systems and facilities needed to support the business.
- Participates in researching vendors, equipment, and software to support business needs.
- Creates reports and presentations for peer and management review and consumption.
- Project Management (5%)
- Manages own tasks within a project plan using I/S standard Infrastructure methodologies (SDLC).
- Manages small to medium size projects, or parts of a project, holding others accountable to delivery deadlines and quality.
- Complies with best practices that have been established for I/S projects at American Family.
- Participates in post-implementation reviews to identify opportunities to continually improve processes.

- Basic knowledge and understanding of one or more infrastructure technologies such as database, network, security, server, storage, and workstations.
- Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining network technologies and solutions.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and resolving second-level system issues.
- Solid knowledge and understanding of network design and configuration.
Travel Requirements
- This position requires travel up to 5% of the time
Working Conditions
- Ability to participate in 24x7 off hour/on call on a rotating basis.
