Position Objective
Working under the guidance of the Safety/Environmental Specialist, this position will assist in the development of policy and programs designed to meet Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Affairs and Industrial Security needs for American Family Insurance.


Primary Accountabilities
- Occupational Health and Safety (30%)
- Researches appropriate government codes and statutes (29 CFR 1910 and 1926) to determine state of corporate compliance strategy.
- Investigates and analyzes occupational accident /illness reports. Develop appropriate action plans to minimize reoccurrence.
- Conducts job hazard nalysis.
- Receives and reviews employee complaints, questions and concerns relative to employee occupational safety and health. With assistance of the Specialist, provide guidance to the manager and employee.
- Reviews current training courses designed to meet compliance with 29 CFR 1910 and 1926.

- Workplace Accommodations (15%)
- Researches and reviews physiological difficulties presented by the individual. In concert with Human Resources, Worker`s Compensation, the attending physician, develop strategy to minimize difficulties.
- Develops final solution and implement using techniques such as work station evaluation and modification, tool modification/redesign, work practice adjustments and engineering controls.
- Locates and evaluates specialized equipment designed to meet stated accommodation needs. Work through vendors and service providers to achieve this purpose.
- Develops and implementd strategies to alleviate conditions that might produce further incidence of disabling illness or injury.

- Training (15%)
- Instructs training classes in regards to Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental and Security affairs in accordance to applicable federal and state standards.
- Assists in developing courses designed to meet regulations found in 29 CFR 1910 and 1926 and other applicable state and federal statutes.

- Industrial Security (15%)
- Advises building management on the administration and maintenance of Security and Life Safety systems which include, but not limited to, photo identification systems, fire detection and notification systems, fixed/portable fire extinguisher systems, security intrusion systems, access control, two-way communication, keying systems and closed circuit television.
- Performs security analysis of existing corporate sites. Makes recommendations based on Corporate Security Standards. Provides direction to building management on steps to bring facilities into compliance with Corporate Security Standards.
- Performs security analysis of potential corporate sites. Analyzes potential areas of concern and develops strategies to mitigate. Makes recommendations to the Planning and Construction and Real Estate departments as to appropriate location adjustments.
- Advises building management on the administration and maintenance of card access and alarm response programming and Photo Identification processing.

- Industrial Hygiene (10%)
- Conducts or arranges for sampling and testing of the work environment through the use of appropriate testing equipment.
- Analyzes and interprets sampling results directly or through contracted laboratories. Relates findings to industry standards and government statutes. Based on sampling results, develops/recommends appropriate courses of action.
- Reviews Material Safety Data Sheets for any potential physical, health or biological hazards.
- Writes, communicates and documents usage guidelines for all hazardous chemicals.

- Documentation (10%)
- Responsible for the documentation and archiving of employee safety training activity for the corporation.
- Maintains corporate records and files pertaining to Material Safety Data Sheets in an orderly and current fashion.
- Documents and archives ergonomic studies. Documents and archives accommodations made for injured/ill employees. Documents the testing and results of workplace factors responding to Industrial Hygiene studies.
- Documents reports made to government agencies regarding hazardous chemical storage, hazardous waste disposal and underground tank disposal

- Environmental (EPA) Affairs (5%)
- Conducts evaluation of hazardous waste produced by American Family and determine the legal, most economical and safest method of disposal.
- Researches and modifies chemicals utilized by the organization to minimize or eliminate hazardous chemical by products.
- Audits or makes recommendations on proper chemical storage to ensure corporate compliance with applicable standards.
- Audits existing Emergency Chemical spill containment and clean up policies.

Education/Licenses/Designations
- Successfully obtain and maintain applicable instruction certifications such as First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving within 9 months of hire.

Travel Requirements
- This position requires travel up to 25% of the time.
