Candidates with insurance industry experience preferred.
Position Objective
This position leads the collection and dissemination of market, consumer, and industry trends and competitive intelligence information from both primary and secondary sources. Analyzes, interprets and reports on information collected. Makes recommendations to Strategy Consultants and other Strategic Business Units regarding opportunities and threats derived from market, consumer and competitive insights. Develops and maintains a robust network of company and industry contacts for information gathering and insight generation.
Primary Accountabilities
- Market Intelligence Expertise, Insight Synthesis & Consulting (45%)
- Identifies emerging and established macroeconomic and societal trends and evaluates their potential business implications for American Family Insurance, competitors and the insurance industry. Areas of focus include the economy, major legislative/regulatory changes, technology, channels of distribution, demographics, social issues, consumer attitudes/beliefs and behaviors, etc.
- Provides regular, ongoing analyses of competitors` activities, strategies/objectives, financial results, rate changes, etc. by state and line of business and creates/maintains company profiles.
- Provides regular, ongoing analyses of market and consumer trends, to determine their potential implications to the company, and influence and support corporate strategic beliefs and actions.
- Identifies industry business model changes, potential non-traditional competitors, substitute products, or new combinations of products/services.
- Uses experience and knowledge to synthesize research information, draw hypothesized conclusions and make educated predictions about the impacts of identified trends and competitors` behaviors.
- Consults with Enterprise Strategists and other strategic business units on how market/consumer trends and competitive actions may impact them or the company and assists in developing appropriate responses.
- Identifies and defines market intelligence needs through collaboration with executives, strategists, and other key stakeholders.
- Synthesizes insights with other Customer and Market Research staff to generate and evaluate ideas to take advantage of market opportunities and/or counter threats. (e.g. new products/service concepts).
- Leads the planning, organizing, and delivery of regular deliverables and ad-hoc research requests.
- Conducts primary and secondary research to support ad-hoc requests for information and insights on market, consumer and competitor trends and issues.
- Market Intelligence Monitoring & Analysis (35%)
- Identifies intelligence sources including internal, external, primary and secondary sources.
- Monitors consumer, market and competitive activities, developments and trends through public and purchased secondary research sources.
- Collects market, consumer trends and competitive insights from various sources including: industry analysts and publications, researchers, academics, consultants, SEC documents, conferences, etc. and contacts inside and outside the industry.
- Works with internal and external suppliers to collect competitive intelligence, such as rate filings and producer/consumer publications. (e.g. Actuarial, Perr and Knight, Forrester, BCG, Competiscan, etc.).
- Works with internal and external suppliers and contacts to identify emerging trends in demographics, consumer behavior, the economy, environment, and politics that may present challenges or opportunities to American Family`s business model.
- Maintains up-to-date information on assigned competitors` products, strategies, and financials.
- Maintains up-to-date information on consumer, industry, and market trends and issues identified as having relevance to short and long term business strategies and tactics.
- Relationship Development, Management & Communication (20%)
- Formally presents research findings and analyses to leadership and other strategic business units.
- Consistently and accurately communicates market, consumer, and industry trends and competitive insights to targeted audiences (i.e. Leadership, Lines, Strategy Consultants, etc.).
- Creates and manages processes for regular communication of market, consumer, industry and competitive intelligence to internal audiences, including Leadership, strategic business units, and Strategy Consultants.
- Develops innovative ways to communicate and share market, consumer, and industry trends and competitive intelligence with internal audiences (regular reports, regularly scheduled presentations, databases, search engines, etc.) Develops and maintains a robust network of contacts within and outside of the insurance/financial services industries and the competitive intelligence community, and communicates with them regularly.
- Develops and maintains a network of internal contacts for information sharing and insight gathering. (i.e. Marketing departments, Actuarial, Sales Management, Product Lines , etc.).
- Develops and maintains collaborative, supportive relationships with other department staff to ensure regular information sharing and insights synthesis.
- Coaches/mentors research analysts and other internal business partners on processes and tools to collect and disseminate market, consumer, industry and competitor information.
